Abstract
Artifacts in the Canadian War Museum’s collections trace their origins to a wide range of people, organisations, locations and events. This article is a preliminary exploration of the part played by the 1st Canadian War Museum Collection Team, led by Farley Mowat, in locating, gathering, documenting and arranging for the transportation of a vast collection of Second World War weapons and materials from Northwest Europe to Canada in 1945. In addition to helping to shed more light on the complexities of the collection’s acquisition, it also provides insights into the challenges that the museum and other institutions faced, and which shaped the fate of many of these artifacts.
Les artefacts des collections du Musée canadien de la guerre proviennent d’une grande diversité de personnes, d’organisations, d’endroits et d’événements. Cet article offre une exploration préliminaire du rôle joué par la première équipe chargée des collections du Musée canadien de la guerre, dirigée par Farley Mowat, dans la localisation, la collecte, la documentation et l’organisation du transport d’une vaste collection d’armes et de matériel de la Seconde Guerre mondiale depuis l’Europe du Nord-Ouest vers le Canada en 1945. En plus d’aider à mieux comprendre les complexités de l’acquisition de la collection, il donne également un aperçu des défis auxquels le Musée et d’autres institutions ont été confrontés, et qui ont déterminé le sort de bon nombre de ces artefacts.
