Abstract
This paper traces prime developments that have led to the present emphasis on 'narrative preaching' and presents 1) factors which increasingly made preaching difficult during the past three decades (the crumbling of traditional authority structures, the advent of pluralism, alternatives to the church's concept of reality, professionals 'intruding' upon the pastor's 'turf') and 2) factors which generated a new approach to preaching (communication studies, Marshal McLuhan, hermeneutics, the re-discovery of story).
